The New york Islanders have just made a stunning move.
In an official announcement directly from the Islanders organization, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello has announced that Islanders head coach Barry Trotz has been fired. The move comes after the Islanders largely failed to deliver on expectations they had for themselves this season, missing the playoffs entirely, although many will be quick to point out that there were mitigating circumstances that made things especially challenging for the Islanders this season.
Trotz is widely regarded as one of the premier head coaches in the entire league and was in fact named the best coach in the entire league in 2019, winning the Jack Adams award, for the job he had done behind the bench of the Islanders. I believe firmly that, unless he doesn't want to return, Trotz will have himself a new job behind the bench of an NHL team in relatively short order.
I have to believe that team's like the Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets will be quick to pick up the phone and give Trotz's representatives a call regarding his availability.
