Breaking: Big development in Nylander negotiations on Monday could determine his future.

In spite of the fact that we are now well into the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season a great deal of the focus in Toronto remains on the one player who has yet to play this season for the Maple Leafs, forward William Nylander. It's no surprise really given the fact that, after a hot start, the Maple Leafs are now coming off a pair of back to back losses and it's even less surprising given the rather monumental developments that took place over the duration of the past week.

Things really heated up when it became known that newly appointed Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas had boarded a plane to Switzerland to meet with the young restricted free agent and when nothing came of that meeting the talk around Nylander only amplified even further. Following that meeting we heard reports that a long term contract was now nothing more than a pipe dream for the Leafs and Nylander and things got even crazier when Dubas was spotted at Madison Square Garden over the week-end.

Dubas presence at a match up between the Calgary Flames and New York Rangers only served to fuel the already rampant trade speculation that was already boiling over following the reports that a long term deal was off the table. We then received confirmation that the Rangers had their own set of scouts in Toronto over the week end and quickly there was a lot more confidence that a Nylander trade was something that could actually happen.

That being said though that speculation may have been very premature as a new development could very well change the perception that everything that has happened over the past several days has created. Sportsnet insider Chris Johnston has now revealed that Dubas will be meeting with Nylander's agent today in New York, likely in the hopes of getting a deal worked out before things deteriorate to the point where a trade becomes the only viable option for the Leafs. Dubas and agent Lewis Gross will meet today, this in spite of the fact that both men were believed to be at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

There's no way to tell how this meeting will go, but it could very well play a major role in determining what the future will look like for both Nylander and the Maple Leafs.
