Breaking: Blockbuster trade falls through at the last second.

We came very close to a very big trade in the National Hockey League, but it appears that one of the player's involved in the deal isn't making things easy.

The St. Louis Blues were reportedly close enough to pulling the trigger on a trade for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk that they gave an Eastern Conference team permission to negotiate a new deal with the young defenseman according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun. Unfortunately for the Blues those negotiations have led to the trade falling through.

While it's unclear which team Shattenkirk was in talks with, the names that continue to come up when he's being discussed are that of the Maple Leafs, Devils and Bruins, at least as far as teams in the East are concerned.

According to Garrioch there are rumors that Shattenkirk is seeking upwards of $7 million per season and that would certainly give any team pause when negotiating a new deal. Shattenkirk is believed to have been thwarted two previous trade attempts by the Blues including a deal that would have sent him to the Edmonton Oilers and one to the Arizona Coyotes.

Make no mistake about it though, he is very much still on the market.
