Breaking: Brand new player to wear the Leafs' jersey!

Trade deadline acquisition Erik Fehr will dress for the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time in tonight’s games against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Leafs gave up defenceman Frank Corrado to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Fehr, d-man Steve Olesky and a 2017 4th-Round draft pick.

Fehr (31) is a veteran center with a right-handed shot, considered to be a depth acquisition for the Leafs’ unexpected return to playoff contention this season. The Leafs hold onto the 8th place in the East and the final wildcard spot, with a three-point lead over their closest competition in the New York Islanders.

The Winkler, Manatoba native brings plenty of playoff experience to the table, he won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh last season. Fehr has struggled this season, being a healthy scratch and even clearing waivers while he was with the Penguins.

Still, a responsible veteran center is never a bad thing to have on the fourth line, and Fehr’ relatively inexpensive $2 million contract expires when the Leafs hang up their skates at the end of the season.

If Fehr can hold his own tonight he may find more regular minutes under coach Mike Babcock, who has a penchant for responsible two-way centers.

Fehr has 103 goals and 99 assists for 202 points across 561 NHL games. He has 60 playoff games under his belt, scoring 8 goals and 2 assists.
