The Boston Bruins will be keeping their captain around for at least one more year.

According to a breaking news report from the Boston Bruins themselves, the Bruins organization has agreed to terms on a brand new deal for captain Zdeno Chara. According to the official report the new contract extension for Chara will be a one year deal that will play Chara a guaranteed $2 million in base salary, although the value of the deal can rise significantly through a series of performance bonuses for the veteran blue liner.

The Bruins are officially reporting that the contract contains $1.75 million in performance bonuses however they did not provide any details regarding how the bonuses on Chara's contract will break down. Thankfully there are National Hockey League insiders on the case and it seems like we do know the specific details of how Chara can nearly double the value of his current deal.

According to a report from TSN National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun the majority of the bonus will be related to his playing time. Should Chara played in a minimum of 10 games during the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season he will trigger a bonus of $1.25 million. The deal was likely structured this way in order to ensure that the Bruins are not on the hook for too much money should the 42 year old injure himself or regress significantly over the course of the upcoming offseason. Additionally Chara could secure an extra $250,000 for himself by making the playoffs that season and additionally could add another $250,000 should the Bruins win the Stanley Cup Championship.

Now that may seem like a ton of money to invest in a player as old as Zdeno Chara but the sturdy blue liner has proven that he can continue to be a quality shut down defenseman in the National Hockey League in spite of the fact that he is clearly beginning to show signs of his age when out on the ice. You also have to consider the intangibles that Chara brings to the Bruins as both the organizations captain as well as one of their most recognizable and longest tenured players.
