Breaking: Capitals coach Barry Trotz appears to throw Ovechkin under the bus.

It was clear from the moment the Pittsburgh Penguins scored their second goal of the game that Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin would be the target of criticism, after all it was his halfhearted clearing attempt that led to a turnover and a Penguins goal, but this caught us by surprise.

After the game head coach Barry Trotz addressed the media, and when he was asked about the performance of his superstar captain this evening, his answer was a damning condemnation of Ovechkin's play.

While he was clearly trying to avoid throwing Ovechkin under the bus, the mere choice of words he used in his response appear to indicate that he was in fact very unhappy with Ovechkin's play. Ovechkin was a -2 on the night so it's not difficult to imagine how frustrated Trotz is with his star player.

"emotionally, I don't want to answer that right now," said Trotz.

Trotz isn't a stupid man by any account, and there has to be a part of him that realizes this is only adding fuel to the fire.
