Monster Signing for the Washington Capitals

There were some rumors that Caps pending restricted free-agents Evgeny Kuznetsov and Dimitri Orlov have indeed received offers from the KHL, but that no signing is imminent. The two Russians would likely command top dollar (ruble?) in the KHL should they chose to chase it, but the most interesting development in such a scenario would be the impact to the Capitals.

Well, it’s over now as The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a six-year deal. $5.1 million AAV. Bob McKenzie added more details on Orlov's new contract: "Orlov's yr-by-yr breakdown: $6.5M, $6.5M, $6.5M, $4.5M, $3.3, $3.3M. $12M in signing bonus, $18.6M in salary. 5-team NTC starts in 19-20."

It’s a good signing for the Caps. It’s more than what Zaitsev got for 7 years but Less than Leddy’s deal with the Islanders, which is a comparable.

Orlov had a great season as he broke out this past season and establish a career-high 33 points in 82 games while playing big minutes on the team’s blue line.
