Breaking: Devastating update on the health of Eddie Lack.

We have some very unfortunate news to announce in regards to the health and status of veteran goaltender Eddie Lack.

According to a report from New Jersey Devils beat reporter Amanda Stein, the long time NHL goaltender has been shut down for the remainder of the season following a surgical procedure designed to repair damage done to his hip. The news comes at a low point in the 30 year old netminder's career and you have to wonder what this could mean for his future as a back up goaltender in the National Hockey League.

Prior to the surgery Lack was not having a good season and had only appeared in 6 games total this season, all of them at the American Hockey League level. In his 6 appearances for the Binghamton Devils Lack looked less than stellar as well recording a 4.10 goals against average and an .863 save percentage, numbers that reflect the struggles he has had in the later stages of his career. In fact over the past 2 seasons combined Lack has appeared in a total of just 8 games at the National Hockey League level and he was not particularly impressive in those outings either.

Through 4 of those games he played in a back up role with the Calgary Flames and there he recorded a very ugly 5.29 goals against average and an equally unappealing .813 save percentage and things would not get much better when he joined the Devils. Lacks numbers did improve but his 3.18 goals against average and .903 save percentage over 4 games with New Jersey were not enough to convicne the Devils to keep him on their NHL roster as a full time back up goalie.

At 30 years of age Lack is certainly still young enough to come back and reestablish himself as a legitimate backup, but given his recent struggles as well as the significance of this particular injury you have to wonder how likely he is to get another shot at proving himself. Lack's ability to have fun on social media as well as his self deprecating humor and overall positivity through his struggles have helped keep him in the good graces of his fans, and it's sad to see one of the truly good guys in the sport go through such a rough patch.

Get well soon Eddie.
