The excitement surrounding the upcoming 2026 Olympic Games in Milan has been tempered by growing concerns over the condition of the main Olympic hockey arena. In past weeks, reports have highlighted a series of issues that could affect athlete performance and the overall experience.

At the beginning of the month, the first test game on the ice revealed significant problems with the surface. Observers noted that the ice appeared soft and snowy, which led to a delay when a large hole developed in front of one of the goals. Such conditions could pose a risk to player safety and game integrity during the high-stakes Olympic events. Additionally, the arena’s scoreboard was deemed inadequate, resembling something from a junior rink, though organizers have promised an upgrade before the Games commence and have kept that promise as we can see in this latest update:

Another major concern is the state of the arena’s amenities. Team Canada’s head coach, Pete DeBoer, remarked on the incomplete locker rooms, which currently lack essential facilities like proper stalls and wash areas.

However on Thursday, there are finally some good news. According to Chris Johnston, who’s been closely monitoring the process in Milan, “there are encouraging reports coming out of Santagiulia Arena.”

“One week out from the start of the Milan Olympic women’s hockey tournament, there are encouraging reports coming out of Santagiulia Arena. Big progress in construction since the test events earlier this month. Logos and other markings now painted on the ice.

“Italy vs. France on Feb. 5 is the first of 33 games scheduled for the venue during the Olympics.”

Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel.

Construction of the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena began in 2023, despite Milan securing the Olympic bid four years earlier. This delay has already resulted in the relocation of several test events, including a U-20 world championship, to other venues. The pre-Olympic schedule has also been quietly adjusted, indicating ongoing uncertainty about the arena’s readiness.

The 2026 Games are significant as they mark the NHL’s return to the Olympics for the first time since 2014. As such, the pressure is on to ensure that the facilities meet the high standards expected by international players and fans.
