There is word from Elliotte Friedman that Dallas Stars veteran forward Tyler Seguin will miss the remainder of the regular season and playoffs after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL. Seguin reportedly wanted to return to the ice, but medical evaluations following the Olympic break confirmed he’s at least four months away from playing again, effectively ruling him out of any potential Stanley Cup run.

Pierre LeBrun added that NHL/NHLPA still have to sign off on paperwork. He also said that Mikko Rantanen, who was injured coming back from the Olympics in Milan, " is likely out longer than 2 weeks. So some of cap relief will be to manage all their injuries but also some trade deadline flexibility as well."

While the news is undeniably tough for Seguin, it provides the Stars with a significant silver lining in the form of salary-cap flexibility. By officially placing Seguin on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), Dallas immediately unlocks full cap relief. Under this season’s LTIR rules, his move increases the Stars’ LTIR pool from $3.67 million to roughly $9.7 million heading into next week’s trade deadline, adding over $6 million in additional cap space.

For general manager Jim Nill and the Stars’ front office, that kind of room is huge. With the deadline just a week away, the extra cap space gives Dallas the ability to pursue a major acquisition, whether it’s a top-six forward, a scoring winger, or an impact defenseman.

Recently, Daily Face-Off has reported these names as possible targets for Dallas: Blake Coleman (Calgary Flames), Robert Thomas (St. Louis Blues), Mario Ferraro (San Jose Sharks), Jordan Kyrou (Blues), Mackenzie Weegar (Flames), Zach Whitecloud (Flames).

Essentially, Seguin’s unfortunate injury has cleared the path for a bold roster move that could transform the team’s playoff outlook.

Seguin’s absence will undoubtedly be felt on the ice, but the Stars now have the flexibility to go big.

Whether they’ll target a blockbuster trade or multiple smaller moves, this LTIR maneuver ensures Dallas can be aggressive when the trade market opens, with a week to go till the March 6 deadline.
