It seems like one of the biggest and toughest guys in the National Hockey League may have finally met his match.

On Saturday the Winnipeg Jets faced off against the Minnesota Wild and the game did not go at all how the Winnipeg Jets and their fans would have liked. Not only did the Jets eventually fall to the Wild by a score of 3 - 1, but they would also lose one of their core players to what initially looked like a relatively serious injury.

Surprisingly it was Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien who was on the receiving end of an injury, when normally you would expect a man like Big Buff to be the one handing out the punishment, and even more surprising was how it happened. It was a big hit courtesy of Minnesota Wild forward Luke Kunin that felled Byfuglien, again the kind of play that you normally expect Byfuglien to be delivering and not on the receiving end of.

The hit itself did not seem particularly troublesome, however what may have been a freak accident clearly left Byfuglien in very bad shape. The hit from Kunin caught Byfuglien square on the shoulder but it was the impact of that blow that appeared to cause the injury. Byfuglien's feet were firmly planted on the ice when he absorbed the impact, an impact he appeared to be ready for, but the force of the blow from Kunin appeared to cause one of his ankles to get jammed up on the ice.

It's hard to tell exactly what happened here but it looks to me like Byfuglien may have rolled his ankle or bent it in an awkward manner. Regardless of what happened it was immediately obvious that Byfuglien was in a great deal of pain as he put his hands on the boards in an effort to brace himself against the pain. After the fact Byfuglien was unable to put any weight at all on his left leg and that of course is a very bad sign for the Jets when you consider just how tough a customer Byfuglien usually is out on the ice.

In fact Byfuglien had to be helped back to the Jets by his teammates so there is obviously serious concern regarding his well being right now.
