Flyers forced to make a call up.

The Philadelphia Flyers have been forced to make an emergency call up after an unfortunate series of events has left the team with some serious depth issues when it comes to goaltending.

First it was revealed that the Flyers had sent goaltender Michal Neuvirth back to Philadelphia last week after he suffered an undisclosed injury in his first game back from an American Hockey League conditioning stint. We did not know at the time how serious the injury to Neuvirth would turn out to be, he had yet to be evaluated by medical staff at the time, but it now seems to be an injury that is significant in nature. The Flyers announced on Monday that they would be placing Neuvirth on injured reserve an indication that he will miss at least another week of action. The Flyers did not suggest that this injured reserve designation would be retroactive to the date of the injury which leads me to believe that it begins today.

That would have been alright given the fact that the Flyers have both Brian Elliott and Calvin Pickard to rely upon even with Neuvirth out, but it was not long before the Flyers were hit with another injury. It's still unclear exactly how it happened but what we do know is that Elliott was leveled by a big hit from teammate Travis Konecny during a Flyers' practice on Sunday and given the fact that they recalled another goalie today it would appear that they expect Elliott to miss at least some time.

The nature of Elliott's injury is still not clear as the Flyers have provided very little detail in that regard, as is usually the case from the organization run by National Hockey League legend Ron Hextall, but we did learn that Elliott was spotted clutching his head yesterday after the hit. This would appear to indicate that the injury was to Elliott's head, but that is purely speculation at this stage of the game.

It seemed like the injuries could have resulted in a potential opening for Flyers prospect Carter Hart but the Flyers have instead opted to bring up young backup Alex Lyon from the American Hockey League. I expect that Lyon will play a backup role behind Pickard who still remains healthy, although that has not been officially confirmed at this time.
