Breaking: Goalie going to jail after attacking player during game.

A goalie is going to jail for what is being describe as an on-ice assault.

A report from James Culic of the Fort Erie Press has revealed that goaltender Todd Ball has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after he attacked Ryan Cox during a 3 on 3 charity game of all things.

According to the report Ball delivered a huge two-handed slash to Cox who was on a breakaway at the time, an attack that came out of nowhere. The situation is made even more confusing by the fact that the two men had never had any altercations in the past. Unfortunately for Cox, he has suffered serious damage in that attack.

From Culic's report:

Since the incident Cox has had numerous surgeries to reconstruct his face and still needs several more, including extensive dental work. The attack, for which Ball pleaded down to the lesser offence of assault causing bodily harm, occurred more than 10 months ago during a charity three-on-three hockey tournament at the arena in Fort Erie.

Considering the extent of the damage 30 days seems lenient, and while the judge cited NHL incidents that had landed in court in the past, Cox understandably felt the context of a charity game was a little different.

“Marty McSorley was a tough guy enforcer in the NHL, earning millions of dollars to do what he did,” said Cox. “This was a charity hockey game in Fort Erie.”
