The Las Vegas Golden Knights haven't even played a single game in the National Hockey League but they have already lost one of their players to injury.

According to a breaking news report from Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press, he has been informed by the Golden Knights that veteran defenseman Nate Schmidt has suffered an injury.

Whyno reports that Schmidt suffered an injury to his ankle while training today, although how exactly that injury occurred and the severity of that injury are currently unclear.

The 26-year-old Schmidt was the player the Golden Knights selected from the Washington Capitals in the NHL Expansion Draft. At the time Schmidt was a restricted free agent but he eventually agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth an average annual value of $2.25 million.

This could be a big loss for Vegas if this turns out to be a serious injury and, while this is merely speculation, it seems unlikely that the Golden Knights would have leaked this news if it was a minor injury.
