It’s a miracle that he was even able to play at all, let alone put in the performance that he did.
When Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray went down with an undisclosed injury in the warmup of the team’s opening game of the Stanley Cup playoffs, fans and analysts feared the worst. Facing the gauntlet of Eastern Conference goaltenders ahead of them like Sergei Bobrovsky, Carey Price, Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby, few gave the Penguins a shot at repeating as Stanley Cup champions… yet here we are.
The Penguins, of course, did repeat as champions with Murray taking back the crease in the Eastern Conference Final after a valiant effort from Marc Andre Fleury. Murray’s injury was never revealed to the media during the playoffs, but with the marathon over and the Cup back in Pittsburgh, the news have finally leaked out:
Ouch. That’s gotta hurt.
If you’ve ever torn a hamstring muscle before, you know how difficult it can be to recover to full health. The fact that Murray was able to recover in such a short period and get back to playing at the level he did is nothing short of remarkable. This latest development only serves to add to the growing legend of Matt Murray in Pittsburgh.
