It was expected by many...

Montreal Canadiens forward Paul Byron will have a hearing later on Wednesday with the league’s Department of Player Safety for his hit Tuesday night on Florida Panthers defenseman Mackenzie Weegar.

Byron was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for charging in the second period of Tuesday’s 5-1 win over the Panthers after crushing Weegar into the boards behind the James Reimer's net. Byron appeared to make contact with the head of Weegar on the hit and might have also left his feet ahead of the hit.

Weegar was seen heading to the team's dressing room and did not return to the contest. After the game, Panthers head coach Bob Boughner confirmed that Weegar is in the concussion protocol. Boughner added that he believed Byron got away with just a two-minute penalty and added that he would let the NHL take care of further discipline.

“I thought we should’ve had the five-minute power play there,” Boughner said, per the Miami Herald. “In my mind, at least, [Byron] left his feet. There’s some intent to injure. So we’ll let the league take care of that and see what they think.”

The Habs forward has never been suspended in his NHL career, which dates back to the 2010-11 season, and will not get the same treatment as a repeat offender. He has tallied 10 goals and 18 points in 34 games so far this season. He also just picked up just six minutes in penalties.

The 25-year-old Weegar has put up one goal and seven points in 42 games this season. The Panthers are likely to give an update on his condition in the coming days.
