Chelios was one of the players with the longest tenure in the NHL. He played for 26 seasons, appearing in 1651 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and a brief stint with the Atlanta Trashers.
He won the Stanley Cup and the Norris trophy three times each.
The Red Wings also announced the remaining of their coaching staff. Former NHL player Tony Granato and former minor leaguer Pat Ferschweiler joining newly appointed head coach Jaff Blashill behind the bench.
