Chris Chelios has spent the past few seasons as an advisor to hockey operations for the Detroit Red Wings. The former defenseman, now 53 years old, has spent some time with the Grand Rapids Griffons mentoring young defensemen. Chelios will now be part of the team's new coaching staff according to NHL.com. In his new position as a coach, Chelios won't be on the bench. He will evaluate the players performance and provide insights to the coaches who are at ice-level. He will also be on ice for the team's practices helping with the defense players. Chelios also got hired as an assistant coach for team U.S.A., which will be participating at the 2016 World Junior Championship in Finland in December and January. Chelios was one of the players with the longest tenure in the NHL. He played for 26 seasons, appearing in 1651 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings and a brief stint with the Atlanta Trashers. He won the Stanley Cup and the Norris trophy three times each. The Red Wings also announced the remaining of their coaching staff.
