This whole situation is a mess!

It has been a slow summer in the NHL, but a story which has managed to maintain our attention throughout these months of dire content has been the whole Matt Duchene fiasco. After having an underwhelming season in 2016-2017, the 26 year-old has been the source of many trade rumors, all of which have yet to concretize themselves.

While some could speculate that the young Canadian may not actually be as good as anticipated, its hard to reach such far-fetched arguments about a player who's lining up for one of the worst organizations in the entire league. Nonetheless, it certainly is a determining factor for GM's of other teams who may not have sufficient cap space to take on the risk of rehabilitating a player. Combined with Joe Sakic's lack-luster negotiation tactics, Duchene's situation has pretty much been at a stand-still since the confirmation that the Colorado Avalanche would not, unsurprisingly, be making the playoffs.

As time goes by, the actual worth of Matt Duchene seems to be diminishing, and teams that were originally not in the mix to obtain his services are becoming possible landing-spots. In fact, according to Second City Hockey, if it were not for the tight cap situation, the Chicago Blackhawks could potentially be in the running to obtain the young forward:

We've seen Stan Bowman's talent at managing tight financial situations, but unless a sizable trade is made by the Windy City formation, it remains unlikely that Duchene will actual ever wear the sacred red and black. That being said, the Hawks could actually be a good place for the youngster, who would be matched with many of his fellow Team Canada compatriots. Unfortunately, if his whole contract situation does not get solved, he could potentially end up being an Olympian next year.
