The Anaheim Ducks have made a strange move and at the time of this writing it seems to be a mystery as to why.

According to a breaking news report from Los Angeles Kings insider John Hoven, veteran forward Jakob Silfverberg has been removed from the Ducks roster. The news comes after Silfverberg played a full game for the Ducks on Friday night, including overtime, one in which he did not appear to suffer any kind of injury or ailment.

The obvious speculation here is that there has been a trade made by the Ducks, but it would be somewhat surprising to see the 31 year old suddenly traded at this stage of his career.

Although originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the second round (39th overall) at the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Silfverberg would go on to play just 48 games in his over 600 game NHL career for that franchise. Nearly Silfverberg's entire career has been spent as a member of the Anaheim Ducks and it looked very much like the longtime NHL winger would play out the remainder of his career with that franchise.

Hoven has speculated that this could be a part of the long awaited Jack Eichel trade, but that is only speculation at this time and the Buffalo Sabres superstar has not officially been linked to this news. Stay tuned for more details.

Any trade involving Silfverberg at this point would have to have some money coming back the other way. The veteran winger is currently on a contract that sees him carry a cap hit of $5.25 million per season for this season and two more after that. That is a big cap hit for any team to take on in the flat cap era of the NHL, especially for a 31 year old player.

NHL insider Darren Dreger also reported earlier today that talks surrounding the Eichel trade have heated up, which could be why Hoven is speculating that this could be involved in the Eichel trade. Sending Silfverberg's cap hit the other way certainly would be one way to make some of the room required to fit Eichel's massive contract.
