Breaking: Jeremy Colliton has been fired.

Blackhawks make the move.

Jonathan Larivee

The Chicago Blackhawks have made a move many of their fans have been anticipating.

According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, it appears as though Jeremy Colliton is "out" as the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Colliton famously took over for Joel Quenneville, the most successful coach in Chicago Blackhawks history and one of the most successful coaches in the modern era of the National Hockey League. Those were always going to be impossible shoes for Colliton to fill and unfortunately for him he inherited the team as it was on a downward trend, one that has continued under his leadership.

This season however things have taken a turn for the worse and with the Blackhawks performing as poorly as they have absolutely no one will be surprised to learn of today's news. The team has managed to collect just a single win through their first 12 games of the regular season and would find themselves at the bottom of the division were it not for the woeful Arizona Coyotes.

Colliton took over for Quenneville as a midseason replacement during the 2018 - 2019 campaign and the Blackhawks would eventually miss the playoffs. They would get in thanks to the extended playoff format in the following season, but that was short lived and the Blackhawks once again missed the playoffs after the 2020 - 2021 regular season. They appear well on track to miss out on the postseason once again, and this in spite of some significant additions in the offseason.

In the end Colliton's record as the head coach of the Blackhawks is a losing one with him collecting 87 wins, 92 losses and 26 over time losses during his time behind the Blackhawks bench.

As I've already stated Colliton was thrust into a difficult situation at the tail end of a successful hockey dynasty and I do hope he will get the chance to bounce back from his time with the Blackhawks. Whether or not he will get a shot with another NHL team after such a tumultuous time in Chicago however will remain to be seen.

Update: Derek King will take over as interim head coach.
