We may have the makings of a rather significant trade underway.

According to a report from Sportsnet National Hockey League insider Nick Kypreos the New York Rangers are currently receiving a lot of attention from rival teams regarding the availability of former first round pick Kevin Hayes. Hayes was selected in the first round (24th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and at 26 years of age he may not be part of the Rangers' future plans.

The Rangers publicly announced that they would be moving towards a rebuild over the course of the 2017 -2019 NHL regular season and to their credit the organization has stayed true to that message since the announcement. Although trading a consistent point producer like Hayes would undoubtedly shorten the Rangers in the short-term it's also a move that would be designed to continue their current trajectory of building a team that will once again become a serious contender for years to come.

As for which teams may have interesting in the experienced center, it sounds like the Winnipeg Jets may be one of the front runners, and it doesn't sound like they will have to give up a tremendous deal in order to get him. According to Kypreos the Rangers would be seeking either a pick or a prospect in exchange for their player, but they will likely want significant value in either of those scenarios. That being said the Jets clearly view themselves as a serious Stanley Cup Contender and adding a players like Hayes would certainly bolster their depth up the middle of the ice.

The Jets did lose some of their depth up the middle of the ice when veteran center Paul Stastny made the decision to sign with the Las Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent, and adding Hayes would serve as a serviceable, and younger, replacement for that loss. No word on which of the Winnipeg Jets' pool of prospects the Rangers may currently have interest in, but given Kypreos' wording it sounds like this one is picking up considerable steam and that may mean that we will have our answer sooner rather than later.

Stay tuned.
