The Montreal Canadiens have just gotten the attention of every member of their fan base for all of the wrong reasons.

According to a breaking news report from Guillaume Lefrancois of La Presse, Montreal Canadiens star forward Jonathan Drouin is missing in action. Drouin was spotted practicing earlier with right winger Joel Armia and center Jesperi Kotkaniemi and there was a strong belief that this trio would form the Habs top line this evening as they set to face off against the Ottawa Senators.

That however may no longer be the case as Drouin's absence would seemingly suggest that not all is well with the organizations star winger. What makes this particularly troublesome is the fact that Lefrancois is reporting that both Armia and Kotkaniemi have both been spotted on the ice during pre game warm ups and they appear to have been preparing as if they did in fact intend to play with Drouin. No one was slotted in Drouin's position on the left wing and the two men simply went through the motions of their warm ups without a left winger on the ice.

Although this is purely speculation on my part this would indicate to me that Drouin may have been pulled out of the line up at the very last minute due to some form of injury or perhaps even a potential illness. The good news is that given the media frenzy around the Canadiens in Montreal we likely won't have to wait very long before we get our answer.

Update: A breaking news report from Mark Denis of RDS is now claiming that Drouin was struck directly in the face by a puck during the opening moments of the Canadiens' warm ups. You expect these things will happen during the course of an NHL season but to see a star player injured so early on in the preseason and in such an obviously avoidable situation will likely get the blood of more than a few Habs' fans boiling.

It's unclear how hurt Drouin is at this time but RDS is now saying that they will be showing images of the damage to his face on their upcoming broadcast, something that indicates to me that this may be a nasty one, although that is purely speculation on my part.

Update: TSN's Darren Dreger has confirmed that Drouin has been injured and is currently being evaluated by medical staff.

Update: According to TSN's John Lu Drouin will be playing tonight in spite of taking the puck to the face.

Stay tuned for more details.
