The Maple Leafs won't be making the big splash in free agency that some were hoping for, but they did make a smaller move when free agency opened on Friday.

According to a report from TSN insider Bob McKenzie the Leafs have agreed to terms with former New York Islanders forward Matt Martin. Furthermore McKenzie is reporting that the deal carries an average annual value of $2.5 million over the next four years.

The bruising forward only put up 19 points last season for the Islanders but nonetheless he finished the season with a positive differential. Not to mention that his scoring ability is not why the Leafs acquiring him, Martin will bring a level of physicality to the team that the Leafs currently don't have.

When you consider that the Leafs will be loaded with young talent next season including players like Auston Matthews and William Nylander , bringing in a guy like Martin makes a great deal of sense, and the Leafs heave the cap space to work with.
