The Detorit Red Wings have been in a tough contract battle with restricted free-agent forward Andreas Athanasiou, and now there are signs that Athanasiou is seriously preparing for a season overseas.
The forward is reportedly set to Fly to Europe this week, with his sights on making the Canadian team for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Athanasiou has scored 27 goals and 16 assists for 43 points in 101 games with the Red Wings over the past two seasons.
The 23-year-old missed the entire preseason and crucial conditioning games, and the season opener is only two days away.
