Breaking: Maple Leafs confirm the worst for Auston Matthews.
Daniel Lea/CSM/Zuma

The Toronto Maple Leafs have just confirmed some very bad news.

As many of your readers will already know Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews was injured on Saturday night when the Maple Leafs hosted the Winnipeg Jets at the Air Canada Center. Although the injury to Matthews did appear to be a rallying point for the team who proceeded to mount a comeback to secure the win over the Jets, I highly doubt that the team or their fans will feel that was a price they were willing to pay for just a single victory.

According to a breaking news from the Toronto Maple Leafs department of public relations, Matthews is now expected to miss a minimum of four weeks as a result of the shoulder injury that he suffered during the game. The Leafs have also confirmed that Matthews will be placed on inured reserve as of today, although that doesn't really mean a great deal given how long he is now expected to miss. This is the second time in as many seasons that Matthews has suffered a serious shoulder injury although this time around the injury is to his left shoulder and not his right shoulder. I suppose the fatc that this is not a reoccurring injury is somewhat of a minor silver lining for the Leafs.

Matthews was injured when he attempted to drive towards the Winnipeg Jets net in the opening minutes of the second period on Saturday night, only to be intercepted on his way there by Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba. Trouba appeared to see him coming from a mile away and as a result had lined himself up perfectly to lay the body hard into Matthews, rocking him with a massive hit in the process. Matthews was immediately in serious discomfort and it was pretty clear based on his body language that this was going to be some form of significant injury. Matthews immediately left the ice following the hit, skating to the Leafs bench while he was doubled over in pain, and it was only a short while later that the Leafs announced he would not be returning to the contest.

A tough break for the Leafs, especially with forward William Nylander already on the sidelines due to contractual reasons.
