The NHL might have decided there’d be no supplemental discipline to Brad Marchand for his punch at the back if the head of an unsuspecting Scott Harrington, it still got involved in the situation…

On Thursday, it was revealed by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman that the league contacted Marchand to give him a warning for punching Harrington in the last minute of Game 3 and a repeat of the offence could result in a suspension.

The Boston Bruins pest was caught punching an unsuspecting Harrington in the back of the head as the blue liner was on his knees late in the third game of the series, which was won by Columbus. Harrington was not injured on the play, but many fans were outraged by Marchand’s actions.

“That play should have been penalized," Bettman told TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead. "Sometimes things are missed on the ice. Our officials must have the most difficult job in sports."

If Marchand repeats the action though, Bettman added "he should look forward to a suspension."

It sounds like the NHL is taking a similar approach to the one they used with Marchand last spring when he was caught licking the face of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Callahan.

Marchand better watch out for the rest of the series seeing that he is now in hot water with the league.

However, the forward should focus on his offensive game for the rest of the postseason. He has been held without a point through three games against the Blue Jackets.

Game 4 of the first-round series will take place tonight in Columbus. We shall see if Marchand got the message…
