Breaking: Montreal Canadiens officially part ways with long-time defenseman

According to many sources in Montreal, the Canadiens have officially parted ways with defenseman Andrei Markov, who played for 16 seasons in Montreal. Even though he has been an unrestricted free agent for more than three weeks, there were still numerous rumors about him being back with the team he played his whole career with.

But it looks like general manager Marc Bergevin and his staff have reportedly had enough with the 38-year-old blue liner, who asks for too much money. Habs' radio play-by-play announcer, Martin McGuire, is the one who first mentioned it was over between both parties.

The signing of defenseman Mark Streit, which was announced earlier today, was another hint that Bergevin wanted to go in another direction next season.

While his salary demands might be considered somewhat excessive for his 38 years of age, Markov could definitely be a great fit in many NHL teams. He proved he could still be reliable for Montreal last season, as he recorded 36 points in 62 games.
