Breaking: More bad news for Smith

Day-to-day or week-to-week? Either way this can’t be good news for the Flames…

The Calgary Flames have announced that they’ve recalled goaltender Jon Gillies on an emergency basis from the Stockton Heat of the AHL. By no coincidence, this announcement comes on the heels of the news that starting goalie Mike Smith will be out of the team’s lineup day-to-day with an upper body injury.

Any way you look at it… this isn’t good news for the Flames. Smith has been arguably the team’s best player in the early going. The fact that they had to make an emergency recall for a rookie goalie says a lot of Smith’s ability to not only play, but backup Eddie Lack.

Gillies has played eight games with the Heat this season, earning four wins and a shutout. He has a stellar 2.50 GAA and could see some action on the Flames’ upcoming six game road trip.
