Goalie Mike Smith pumped his fist after a 31-save shutout for the Calgary Flames in a 2-0 win over the visiting Minnesota Wild on Thursday, but it might be another one of his teammates getting in trouble for using his fists in the dying seconds of the game.

After Wild defenseman Matt Dumba leveled center Mikael Backlund with a hard check, the blue liner was jumped by Smith's Flames teammate Ryan Lomberg in the final minute of the third.

Lomberg was assessed an instigator, five-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct, a slew of penalties that culminated in a one-game suspension and $10,000 fine for head coach Bill Peters on Friday, as confirmed by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

"Calgary’s Ryan Lomberg has been automatically suspended for one game and Coach Bill Peters has been fined $10,000 under rule 46.22, Instigating in the Final Five Minutes of Regulation."
"In addition, Calgary’s Ryan Lomberg will have a hearing today for a legal line change for the purpose of starting an altercation."

The penalty for this type of action is a 10-game suspension, if league goes that route...

But that's not all for the Flames: captain and star defenseman Mark Giordano also has a phone date with the NHL Department of Player Safety. He will have a hearing today for kneeing Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu.

Captain Mikko Koivu exited the game in the third period and did not return after getting tripped up along the boards by Calgary. After a closer look, it was determined that Giordano caught Koivu’s left knee with his left knee. The Flames' captain was penalized on the play for tripping.

So, while it was a great win for the Flames, who have now topped the Pacific Division at 18-9-2 and improved to 13-2 this season when scoring the first goal of the game, it could turn out to be a costly loss in the end.

We will know more later today on what the sentences are for the two Flames players.
