BREAKING: Newest Bruins Rookie given opportunity of a lifetime

It sure hasn’t taken very long for recently signed rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy to find minutes with the big club in Boston.

According to CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty, McAvoy has been paired up with team captain Zdeno Chara in practice and will likely be given significant minutes to start the Bruin’s Playoff campaign.

McAvoy signed an entry-level contract with the Bruins on April 10th, less than two weeks after his Amateur-Try-Out in the AHL with the Providence Bruins. The 19-year-old played four games with Providence, and managed to put up two points and a +/- of plus-3.

It wasn’t necessarily his brief stint in the AHL that convinced Bruins management that McAvoy was ready for the NHL, although it surely helped. His amazing two seasons with Boston University went a long way to convincing Bruins brass that he was a player they needed. McAvoy had 8 goals and 43 assists for 51 points in 75 games in the NCAA with Boston University. He also had a plus/minus of plus-19.

He might be out of college, but his education will continue in the NHL. Fortunately, McAvoy is being given not only special attention from the coaching staff, but also the mentorship of one of Boston’s greatest defensemen.

If head coach Bruce Cassidy keeps Chara and McAvoy together, they’ll be playing second-pairing defense minutes at least. That’s a ton of responsibility for a teenage defenseman, no matter how talented he his.

With defensemen Brandon Carlo and Torey Krug sidelined, Boston does need to fill the gaps at least temporarily, and McAvoy is being given the opportunity of a lifetime.

The Bruins take on their division rival Ottawa Senators in the first game of their Stanley Cup Playoff series on Wednesday, April 12th.
