New KHL board member wants to keep Russian players.
Former NHL player, Slava Fetisov has been elected to the KHL's board of directors. Vyacheslav Fetisov played in the NHL for the NewJersey Devils and won two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings. At first it seems like a great news, but Fetisov has troubling plans of his own, according to The Hockey News.
His first goal is to set up a KHL team in China. The move is pretty ambitious, but still achievable.
His second goal makes less sense, Fetisov wants to keep Russian players in Russia until they turn 28. The move would keep young exciting players in the KHL, generating more revenu and exposure for the league. With all the problems surrounding the KHL at the moment, apparently teams were late by months to pay their players, the league saw four young promising players leaving the league to play in the NHL next season. All but one were under the age of 28.
A lot of questions are worth being asked...
Will a player under 28, that reached free agent status in the KHL, be able to sign in the NHL?
Will teams from the KHL and NHL trade between them, in order to get a young Russian player?
This eventuality is creating more questions to ask than answers for solving the KHL's problems.
