The Montreal Canadiens and defenseman Mark Streit have officially split. Signed by the Habs as a free-agent this past July, the 39-year-old Streit played only two games for the team this season before being placed on waivers and having his contract terminated.

The veteran defender won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, but was in the press box for much of his time with the team. While Streit was once a power play wizard who produced several 50+ point seasons, and even a 62 point season a decade ago, it’s clear that the game has passed him by. He simply no longer has the foot speed to keep up with the increased pace of today’s game.

So, what’s next for the former Swiss native? After 786 games and 434 points is it finally time for him to hang them up for good?
