As a general rule of thumb it's usually not a good sign when ownership gets involved in making decisions for their clubs, and in some cases, when ownership effectively acts like a helicopter parent, it can be an unmitigated disaster.

However today's comments from Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk will likely be welcomed by fans of the Ottawa Senators who have just recently dropped out of a playoff spot, as he has vowed a major shake up of his organization. Melnyk is clearly not pleased with the direction of his team, and has made it clear that no one, not the players, coaches or management are safe.

“We’re going to have to make changes for next year.

“I’m looking at all of it. It’s right across the board,” said Melnyk, as per Sportsnet's Luke Fox. “There’s nobody safe when you have a year like we just did. No way. The status quo will just us there next year."

Melnyk's primary concern appears to be the inconsistent play of his team, and he also plans to address that by making changes to his organization, and potentially to the team's roster. Perhaps the most scathing criticism of all from Melnyk was referring to decisions, like the one made to start prospect Matt O'Connor in the home opener, simply as “stupid.”
