The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has made a ruling regarding Detroit Red Wings' enforcer Luke Witkowski.

According to Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos, after a "lengthy internal league debate" the league will in fact suspended Witkowski and. to make matters worse. will enforce the full 10 game suspension under rule 70.6 of the NHL rule book.

Witkowski's suspension stems from his decision to return to the ice after being escorted off by NHL officials, however the debate surrounding this decision centered around the fact that Flames agitator Matthew Tkachuk struck Witkowski on the back of the leg as he left the ice. Many felt the fact that Tkachuk provoked the reaction Witskowski deserved some leniency.

The league seemingly disagrees however, but it doesn't sound like Witkowski will be the only player suspended as a result of Wednesday's brawl in Detroit. Kypreos is reporting that Tkachuk will also face a discipline hearing tomorrow for his part in the incident, and a hearing usually leads to a suspension.

If you happened to miss last night's brawl in Detroit, you can read about it and watch it here.
