Breaking: NHL team makes historic signing
Keystone Press

The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they’ve signed Chinese goaltender Zehao Sun to an amateur tryout contract for their two-game stint versus the Los Angeles Kings in the upcoming 2017 NHL China Games.

Sun will act as the team’s emergency goaltender and likely will not dress for games, but will join the team in practice during its stay in China. Sun has represented China internationally at several tournaments throughout his career, most recently at the 2017 IIHF World Hockey Championships - Division II - Group B. Sun led China to a perfect 5-0 record in that tournament and earned his nation a promotion to the Division’s A Group for 2018.

It’s very unlikely that Sun will see any game time with the Canucks, making the contract signing a mostly symbolic gesture. Kudos to the Canucks for a smart PR move and for giving new fans in China another reason to love the game of hockey.
