Breaking: NHL veteran signs massive new deal worth over $40 million.

A veteran National Hockey League forward continues to defy all the odds and has now secured himself a massive new contract.

According to a breaking news report from Columbus Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, the Columbus Blue Jackets have just signed Cam Atkinson to a massive seven year deal that will pay him $40.25 million over the term of the contract. That's an average annual value of $5.75 million.

Atkinson, a former 6th round draft pick in 2008, has never scored fewer than 20 goals for the Blue Jackets when playing a full NHL season, and he is coming off the very best season of his professional career.

Atkinson put up a very impressive 35 goals last season and he added 27 assists for a total of 62 points in 82 games and already has 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points in 15 games this season.

The two teams were rumored to be closing in on a deal earlier tonight, and according to Portzline that information leaked when the two sides were working out the final details of the deal. Those details now include both a no-trade and a no-movement clause, although the specific details of those clauses have not yet been made available.

Congratulations to both sides who are now likely joined at the hip through at least the 2024-25 season.
