The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a curious signing today, one that is likely purely for depth purposes, but curious nonetheless.

The team has announced the signing of reviled veteran forward Tom Sestito, who despite being in no way shape or form a household name has been one of the most harshly criticized NHL players in recent memory. The deal is a two-way deal, and Sestito is expected to be placed on waivers and assigned to the Penguins AHL affiliate, we do not expect any teams will attempt to claim him.

Sestito last made headlines after he came under fire for his thuggish behavior on the ice, behavior that eventually led to him being unceremoniously dismissed from the Canucks organization, a situation in which the Canucks would not even let him report to their AHL club. ESPN once referred to Sestito as a boxing hobo on skates.

It's an odd signing by the Penguins, and it will be interesting to see where they go with this.
