Breaking: Penguins call up a new goalie after waiving Niemi.
Keystone Press

Earlier today the Pittsburgh Penguins made the decision to waive veteran netminder Antti Niemi and that left many wondering who the Penguins would use as a back up for Matt Murray. Now we have the answer.

A report from Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press has revealed that the Penguins have recalled goaltender Casey DeSmith from their American Hockey League affiliate the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins.

Desmith has only appeared in three games thus far this season but has had incredibly strong performances in his outings recording a 0.98 goals against average and a .965 save percentage over that stretch.

It's unclear if this is merely a temporary solution as the Penguins search for a potential trade or signing that would allow them to bring in a more experienced NHL backup, but it seems likely that DeSmith will get the shot to show his skills at the NHL level for the first time in his professional career.

More to come on this story as it develops.
