Peter Laviolette is officially back in the National Hockey League.

The news was first confirmed on Monday when NHL insider Elliotte Friedman announced that Laviolette has been named the new head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. It sounds like it's a solid acquisition on the part of the Kings with the insider reporting that both the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs had also expressed interest in Laviolette.

No word yet on whether or not either of those teams had made a formal offer.

In Laviolette the Kings are getting one of the most experienced head coaches currently available, with Laviolette boasting an impressive 1,594 career games as an NHL head coach so far. Laviolette has a record of 846 wins, 562 losses, 25 ties, and 161 overtime loses over that stretch.

Perhaps most important of all however is the fact that Laviolette is a proven winner, having previously led the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup championship all the way back in 2006. Laviolette has had varying degrees of success with numerous teams over the years since that time, but there's no taking away such a major accomplishment from him.

The terms of Laviolette's new deal have not yet been disclosed.
