The Detroit Red Wings have announced a big shift in goal, one that will likely be very well received by their fan base.

A report from Brendan Savage of has revealed that goaltender Jimmy Howard has been called up from the American Hockey League after his second conditioning stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Howard had been through a previous conditioning stint in February, but during a game with the Griffins he re-injured himself imposing a significant delay on his return to the National Hockey League.

When healthy Howard has been Detroit's best goalie this season, and while it's unclear if he will be getting a start right out of the gate, we do know he is expected to join his team in Detroit once they complete their road trip tonight in Boston.
