We have a big contract singing to announce.

According to a breaking news report from TSN National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBruin, the Carolina Hurricanes have come to terms on a new deal with 24 year old forward Tuevo Teravainen. LeBrun reports that the two sides have agreed on a contract with a 5 year term that will carry an average annual value of $5.4 million per season, which means that Teravainen is now sent to earn a whopping $27 million over the length of this new deal.

The move does not come as all that much of a surprise given the fact that Teravainen has played a big role in keeping the Hurricanes competitive this season in spite of some of the difficulties the Hurricanes have had in what remains something of a transitional period for the organization. Through 48 regular season games with the Hurricanes Teravainen has 10 goals and 29 assists for a very respectable 39 points. On top of that he has been rather disciplined acquiring just 6 total penalty minutes on the season thus far and recording an impressive plus minus rating of +15 thus far.

This has to feel like a major win for the Hurricanes and their fan base considering that they acquired the former Chicago Blackhawks 1st round draft selection in a trade roughly 3 years ago for relatively little. The Hurricanes allowed the Blackhawks to unload Bryan Bickell's contract on them and gave up a 2nd and a 3rd round draft choice to pick up Teravainen who has been excellent for them the past two seasons.

During the 2017 - 2018 campaign Teravainen was already showing clear signs of taking his game to the next level with a 23 goal performance that included 41 assists for a total of 64 points over the full 82 game campaign. This latest season from the young Finnish forward appears to show that he intends to continue building on that evolution in his game and that is an extremely positive sign for the Hurricanes organization as a whole, especially when you consider he is such a young player.

This deal ensures that his short term future will remain with the Hurricanes, at least for as long as they feel it should.
