The troubling news surrounding Kris Versteeg of the Calgary Flames that was circling on Thursday have been confirmed - and the verdict is not good.

The Flames have published an update on the forward's health, and though he was recently placed on injured reserve due to an undisclosed lower-body injury and originally listed as day-to-day, the news is now way worse.

He will fly to New York and undergo hip surgery on Monday.

The status now being month to month, many believed the winger's season is over.

A huge part of the top power play unit, Versteeg's role will need to be replaced. Mark Jankowski replaced Versteeg on the top power play, but they just weren't in sync, unable to capitalize on any of their opportunities.

Versteeg suffered the injury on Nov. 24th at Dallas and has missed the past three games.

Hopefully this isn't career-ending.

Versteeg only has 8 points this season, but has proven his value on the power play. He posted 37 points for the Flames in 69 games last season, good for about half a point per game.
