Breaking: Three players hit the waiver wire today!

After a few days of quiet activity on the waiver wire, two NHL teams changed it all on Thursday.

The New York Rangers have placed veteran defenseman Brendan Smith on waivers today, as first reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

Smith, a former first round pick, 27th overall, of the Detroit Red Wings in 2007, has tallied a goal and eight points in 44 games this season with New York. He was traded to the Rangers at last year's trade deadline for a third round pick in the 2017 draft (Zachary Gallant) and second round pick in the 2018 draft.

The move took place after the Rangers recalled defenseman Neal Pionk from the AHL.

The Rangers are also rumoured to be entering a retooling or rebuilding mode this season, possible foregoing a playoff spot to focus on the future.

Smith signed a lucrative contract this offseason.

Then, it was also announced that the Carolina Hurricanes have placed centre Marcus Kruger and winger Josh Jooris on the wire as well.

Kruger has taken part in 48 games with the Canes this season, in which he has recorded a goal and six points. Jooris, who was never drafted in the NHL,  has posted three goals and three assists in 30 games in Carolina.

Some teams could find a suitable match in one of these three players before the waiver deadline at noon tomorrow.

Smith, the most likely player to find a suitor, could be claimed as a few teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals are seeking help on the back end.

To be continued...
