Breaking: Toronto has made Marner a MEGA contract offer and it has been rejected!

Holy cow.

I would imagine that this will probably not sit well with the Toronto Maple Leafs fan base.

Former National Hockey League general manager Brian Burke has just confirmed rumors that we have all heard floating around as of late, and it sounds like Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner has no intention of signing a long term deal with his home town Maple Leafs. Burke revealed during a radio interview today that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs organization have made what can only be described as a staggering offer to Marner, only to have that deal turned down by Marner and his team.

According to Burke the Marner camp turned down a stunning offer than would have paid Marner a whopping $80 million over the full term of the contract.

"My understanding is that a very significant offer was made, a full 8 year term and $10 million a year, one of our guys told me and heard right from the participants," said Burke."

When pressed a little for more info Burke revealed that the information was coming from a very good source indeed, Mitch Marner's own agent Darren Ferris.

"It was a guy on our staff who talked to the agent," added Burke."

Additionally Burke revealed that at this stage of the process that he fully expects Marner will go into the free agent period and will look to receive offers from rival teams, even if he does not end up singing on the dotted line.

"If I got this far, if I got to June whatever today is, I would wait until July 1st. I wouldn't sign and none of these guys have.... So the notion that they are waiting until July 1st to see if there is an offer sheet, I would do the same thing if I were representing this player."

It sounds like the sticking point here is the 8 year term on the deal, and perhaps also the contract that was given to Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Auston Matthews. It sounds like respect may be somewhat of an issue here for the Marner camp with him struggling to get ice time early in his career and with some of his teammates making bigger money in spite of him being the organizations leading scorer last season.

This one may get ugly for the Maple Leafs.
