Breaking: Veteran forward may need surgery after getting drilled from behind.

Earlier this week New York Islanders veteran forward Nikolay Kulemin took a very nasty looking hit from Edmonton Oilers defenseman Eric Gryba, but while the hit looked ugly Kulemin seemed to be alright.

The Islanders winger bounced right back up from the hit and immediately headed to the bench where he appeared to be in some discomfort, but not enough that he immediately left to the locker room. He would leave eventually however and now the latest updates on his health suggest that he may in fact have been seriously injured on the play.

Islanders insider Arthur Staple is now reporting that while we may not hear anything officially from the Islanders over the next few days, his sources have informed him that surgery is now a possibility for Kulemin.

It's still unclear what exactly the injury to Kulemin is at this time, the Islanders have placed him on injured reserve but did not provide any details regarding the nature of his ailment.

Here's the hit that caused the injury.
