The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded forward Scott Wilson and a 2018 third-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for Riley Sheahan and a 2018 fifth-round pick.

TSN insider Bob McKenzie confirmed the deal on his Twitter account:

We knew something big was coming, since Detroit had to make room for Andreas Athanasiou.

Sheahan was drafted in the first round of the 2010 NHL draft by Detroit, 21st overall. In 292 games in the NHL, he amassed 39 goals and 60 assists for 98 points. He added four more in 17 playoff games. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound centerman is 25 years old and earns $2,075 million per year.

Wilson is also 25 years old, but was selected one year after Sheahan, in the seventh round. He only played 106 games in the NHL. He earns $625,000 per year, which gave Detroit enough cap space to officially sign Athanasiou.

More details to come.
