Breaking: Young prospect loses his life after on ice tragedy.

We have some very, very sad news to report. And a warning to our readers some of the details of this story may be disturbing to some.

According to Russian language quotes transcribed in English in a report from The Hockey News this morning young Russian prospect Alexander Orekhov has lost his life 3 weeks after being placed in a medically induced coma. Orekhov was injured in a freak accident when he was struck in the neck by a puck, and that puck just caught him in the wrong place, resulting in severe trauma.

More details from The Hockey News:

Orekhov, 16, was struck with the puck in the second period of a game against Sibir Novosibirsk. According to Sport.sk, the shot that hit Orekhov struck him with enough force that it “damaged the carotid artery and broke several bones.” Orekhov collapsed on the ice and suffered cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated and taken to local hospital, at which point he was put into a medically induced coma.
After nearly three weeks in a coma, however, Orekhov passed away Tuesday.
“Today, (Alexander) died of his injuries,” Novokuznetsk’s Vladimir Rokkel told RSport.ru. “We just want to express my deepest condolences to the family This is an irreparable loss for the entire hockey.”
Orekhov had a very bright future ahead of him, and to see his life cut short by such an accident is tragic, we would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family and his loved ones in this terrible time of mourning.
