Following the termination of Randy Caryle today speculation has already started regarding the future of many within the Leafs organization. It's hard to imagine that the Leafs are not looking to make some major shake ups in the roster, names like Kessel and Phaneuf are already being tossed around, it seems like many are expecting the eject button to get hit, and hit fast. However as much as Leafs fans may not like to hear it, Brendan Shanahan's goals may be more long term oriented than that. The most juicy of those potential long term goals is the possibility of acquiring the services of arguably the best coach in the NHL in Mike Babcock. It's no secret that Mike Babcock has been looking for several things the Leafs are in a prime position to offer. Babcock wants more control over player personnel decisions, and many are already speculating that Dave Nonis' time is almost up as General Manager of the Maple Leafs, if Mike Babcock were to come in a role similar to that of Patrick Roy in Colorado, he would have that control he wants. Babcock is also looking for a major upgrade in salary, in fact multiple reports from credible sources have stated that Babcock has made crystal clear the fact that he feels he deserves to be the highest paid coach in the NHL, and it's hard to argue with his line of thinking. The Leafs are a team with seemingly unlimited resources, they would be able to give Mike Babcock that majir payday he is looking for, some have suggested Babcock is looking for as much as $5 million dollars annually. Last but not least, it's no secret that Babcock has a solid relationship with current Leafs President of Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan, and who doesn't wanna work with their buddy? UPDATE: Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,  has just stated on Sportsnet radio that the Leafs as an organization believe they have a very good chance of acquiring the services of Mike Babcock at the end of the season.
