New Jersey Devils’ Brendan Smith has been suspended for two games for slashing Philadelphia Flyers’ Travis Konency during Thursday’s game.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety made the announcements on Friday.
As for Konecny, he has has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for cross-checking Smith.
The incident took place late in the third period of the Devils 4-3 overtime victory over the Flyers.
Konency was skating towards his team’s bench and hit Smith across the back with his stick. In retaliation, the Devils defenseman slashed him across the chest, causing the Flyers’ forward to double over in pain.
Smith was assessed a minor penalty for slashing on the play while Konecny did not receive a penalty for the altercation.
A lot happened in this game as Flyerd’ Garnet Hathaway sent Luke Hughes crashing into the boards and was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct as a result of the hit.
After that, things remained physical between whistles l for the remainder of the game.
Now, Konency has to paid and Smith has been banned two games for his actions. He will be eligible to return to the Devils’ lineup when New Jersey faces the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.
The Devils are in action later today against the visiting San Jose Sharks. Smith will be watching from the press box…
