Brian Burke already on the hot seat in Pittsburgh.

Burke may not be a Penguin for long.

We have an interesting report regarding the current status of Brian Burke, current President of Hockey Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Over the years Burke has gained mass appeal as both a former National Hockey League general manager and as an on air television personality when not working as an NHL executive, and as a result it has made him something of a high profile figure in the NHL. Unfortunately with that kind of profile also comes a great deal of scrutiny, and it sounds like that scrutiny may be catching up to Burke in his relatively new role in Pittsburgh.

It has been just a little over a year since Burke took over as President of Hockey Operations for the Penguins, his hiring was announced alongside that of Penguins general manager Ron Hextall's, but since his appointment the Penguins have failed to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs. Twice the Penguins have been eliminated right out of the gate, and while you can certainly debate whether or not the blame for that should fall at Burke's feet, it sounds like the Penguins' new ownership group may indeed see it that way.

In a recent article for the New York Post, Rangers insider Larry Brooks revealed that Penguins ownership is not thrilled with what they have seen from their new management team. In fact Brooks would go so far as to suggest that the idea of Burke keeping his position within the team may not be what they have in mind moving forward.

From Brooks:

So we’re hearing this new Pittsburgh ownership group may not be so enamored with Brian Burke keeping his post as president of hockey ops after a second straight first-round flameout.

It's worth noting that thus far the Penguins themselves have shown no indication of this, and in fact if anything you could argue that the opposite is the case. On the very same day that this report was published by Brooks, the Penguins were promoting Burke's positive relationship with their organization via the team's official social media by publishing a video of him fishing with Penguins radio play by play voice Josh Getzoff.
